The Blue Milk of a Galaxy Far Far Away

After our little health kick last week in the far-off fantasy lands, we are now travelling the stars to a galaxy far far away to try the legendary Star Wars drink blue milk, as seen in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Blue milk is also known as Bantha milk, as it is produced by a female Bantha and like other animal-based milks, it is thought to be protein rich and nutrient dense. Get ready to pour yourself a jug full and find out if it will hold up as a tasty milk alternative or, will it be as ghastly as it looks?

The ingredients call for goat’s milk (or other milk substitute, so I used oat as I am not a fan of animal milks), avocado, blueberry syrup, vanilla ice cream and blue food dye; Mix everything in a blender and pour out to get your very own blue milk (no Banthas were harmed in the making of this recipe). I ended up making my own blueberry syrup, as I couldn’t find any in the shop and I didn’t think I could go through a litre of blueberry syrup once I bought it. In case you want to make your own, I’ve added my handy little guide to the end.

So, what’s the verdict then? It tastes like you would expect, a slightly sweet avocado tasting drink. It has the colour, obviously from the food dye, but it might have tasted nicer if I had taken the blue food dye out and just added more blueberry syrup. As a drink mimicking the Star Wars blue milk drink, it does the job, but I wouldn’t be making it for my friends in a hurry. Instead, I would substitute the avocado for Greek yogurt, so you still have the thickness and protein element of the drink, without the overbearing avocado taste. Again, ifyou wanted a fruitier taste, you could add more of the blueberry syrup into it as well.

Overall, if you want to have a true authentic blue milk drink, stick to the original recipe. If you want something you can actually drink, make the changes I suggested.

Blueberry Syrup

 150g blueberries

 150ml water

 150g sugar

 1 tablespoon lemon juice of freshly squeezed lemon juice

1. Add the blueberries, water and sugar into a pan and turned it on to a medium heat.

2. Continuously stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved (about 5 minutes).

3. Stir occasionally and after about 10 minutes, start to squish the blueberries with the back of the wooden spoon to help release the juice out of the blueberries (if they haven’t already burst).

4. Keep stirring the mixture occasionally until it starts to thicken up, then stir continuously until it get to the consistency you want it.

5. Take off the heat and strain the mixture into a jug using a sieve.

6. Add the lemon juice to the blueberry mixture and boom, your own blueberry syrup is ready to go.
