Rambling about the reveal of ‘Spyro: The Realms Beyond’

8 years after the last game, 18 years after the last original game and I was brushing my teeth for Night Shift. The noise I made scrambling down the stairs, toothbrush in mouth, would be the the thing of urban myth. It finally happened, a brand new Spyro game was revealed.

Admittedly we got very little from the reveal with about 10 seconds of a gameplay snippet. It was quite a telling bit of gameplay as it seems like a major mechanic of A Realm Beyond is free flight, previously only seen in the Speedway levels of the originals and as a mechanic of Dawn of the Dragon. I’m holding off judgement for now to see how it plays mechanically and design wise.

Everything else is new apparently - a brief tease of a dark figure wielding a staff who is more than likely our villain, some new little critters known as the Harakeets - little rabbit bird things. That’s all we get from the trailer.

There’s information from the Steam Page - ‘When Spyro™ finds himself stranded, his journey to discover a way home is interrupted by the arrival of a vicious invading force known as the Scavs. Spyro™ must make new allies and rise to protect this realm before it’s changed forever’.

There’s not a ton to go off there but I do worry that the series will leave too much behind - like we don’t even see Sparx in the trailer. I’m sure Sparx is around - there’'s not been a single Spyro game without him. I’m not saying I need the full Spyro 3 roster but fan favourites like Hunter and Elora would be cool. Balance the old with the new.

I’m already eager for more information and I’m sure we’ll see more soon given the game’s Spring 2027 release date. Spyro is back, and that makes me very very happy.
