Hopefully a short time in the future, in this Galaxy right here – Holding out hope for the release of some RPG Star Wars titles

If you watched Geoff Keighley’s annual Video Game Awards, you’ll have seen the brief teaser for a new Star Wars game (Not Galactic Racer, more on that later), that game was Fate of the Old Republic, a new Star Wars RPG from Casey Hudson of Mass Effect fame. Your excitment would have been palpable until the reports came out that the game was fresh in development and probably wouldn’t see the light of day until 2030. Ah, Poodoo.

Naturally Casey Hudson came out, arms flailing saying “Hey guys don’t worry it’ll be before 2030’ but even a November 2029 release would be just under 4 years from now. I’ve just turned 27, I could be 31 or 32 before the game releases. You can see why people may want to wash their hands of the idea now. It’s certainly not helped by Star Wars’ track record with game announcements.

Of course we’ve had other titles – Outlaws, the Jedi duology, smaller games here and there but think back to the cancelled Darth Maul game, Battlefield 3, 1313, Amy Hennig’s Project Ragtag. They’re the cancellations we know about – Star Wars Eclipse was announced in 2021 but we shouldn’t expect anything until 2027 ish, yeah right. There’s also the long gestating Knights of the Old Republic Remake – announced in 2021, restarted and given to a competent studio in 2023. KOTOR I have more faith in than Eclipse but the stars could be alligning in a good way.

Recent leaks have mentioned that despite the troubles with the KOTOR remake, a remake of it’s sequel game is also planned. I dare say that wouldn’t be the case if the first one was going so terribly. From my understanding, the sequel is a quick asset reuse title like Majora’s Mask was to Ocarina of Time for example, so we could see both titles resurge in one big announcement. That brings us to Fate, which is described as a spiritual successor to the KOTOR titles. I assume it means the originals, but the remakes could help direct the future of Fate, making it KOTOR 3 in all but name and hopefully help speed up the development of the game.

It’s mostly a fool's dream, at least in 2026 we know we’re going to be getting Zero Company and Galactic Racer, with Jedi 3 perhaps the year after. Some Star Wars projects are not to be but I really hope these come to fruition.
